Now filing a Right to Information (RTI) application in Jammu and Kashmir is as easy as it can get and there is no need to go to any office to file RTI application and to wait for the reply to come by post. The RTI online portal launched by Government of Jammu and Kashmir provides for the opportunity to seek information from the comfort of your home only. This portal provides citizen the option to not to just file RTI, but also track status and also file appeal if not satisfied with reply.

Step-by-Step Guide to File an RTI Application Online in Jammu & Kashmir

  1. Access the RTI Online Portal:

  2. Register or Log In:

    • For new applicant click on "Click here to submit request"


    • Read the guidelines for use of RTI Online portal and check the box at the end for "I have read and understood the above guidelines".

    • Enter email id, Mobile number and captcha code and click on submit.​

    • Enter the OTP received on mail or mobile. (OTP is shared on both)



  3. Initiate a New RTI Application:

    • Now you get into the Online RTI request form to file the RTI as per your requirement.​


  4. Select the Relevant Public Authority:

    • From the drop down menu select the department or public authority from which you seek information.

    • A comprehensive list of public authorities is available on the portal.

  5. Enter the personal details:

    • Submit the details of the applicant as to whom is seeking the information under RTI.​

    • The required detail is sought as in the online application form itself.

  6. Compose Your Application:

    • In the text box "Text for RTI Request application", enter the information that you seek from the chosen public authority.

    • The text is limited to 3,000 characters. If your application exceeds this limit, you can upload a PDF document containing the full details upto the size of 1 MB.

  7. Attach Supporting Documents (If Necessary):

    • If you have any relevant documents to support your application, upload them in the designated section.

  8. Pay the Application Fee:

    • The standard RTI application fee is ₹10.

    • Payments can be made online through the portal using available payment methods.

    • Note that once paid, the application fee is non-refundable, even if the application is rejected.

  9. Submit the Application:

    • Review all the information you've provided to ensure accuracy.

    • Click the "Submit" button to finalize your application.

    • Upon submission, you'll receive a unique registration number via SMS and email, which you can use to track the status of your application.

  10. Track Application Status:

    • Use the "View Status" feature on the portal to monitor the progress of your application by entering your registration number.

  11. Receive Response:

    • The concerned public authority is required to respond to your RTI request within 30 days of receipt.

    • Responses will be provided electronically through the portal.
