🌧️ Disaster Relief in J&K (2025): How to Claim Compensation for Rain, Landslide, and Other Calamity Losses under SDRF & NDRF

Location: Jammu & Kashmir

Situation: Landslides, flash floods, and heavy rainfall have caused massive damage across multiple districts. Many households are unaware that they are entitled to financial relief under government schemes.

Let’s break it down in simple terms.

Introduction:

The recent landslides and heavy rainfall in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) as of April 2025 have left many homes, livestock, and livelihoods in ruins. If you’ve been affected, don’t worry—help is available through the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). These funds, updated by the Government of India on October 10, 2022, offer financial relief for damages caused by natural disasters like floods, landslides, and more. This guide breaks down the process, eligibility, and relief amounts for fully damaged houses, partially damaged houses, and loss of cattle, tailored to the current J&K situation.

Why This Matters Now:

In the past few days, inclement weather has triggered landslides and floods across J&K, damaging homes and wiping out livestock. The SDRF and NDRF are here to support you with immediate relief, recovery, and rebuilding. Whether your pucca house collapsed or your cattle were lost, you can claim assistance—let’s explore how!

What Are SDRF and NDRF?

  • SDRF: Managed by state governments, it covers 50% of disaster response needs, with 40% for relief, 37.5% for recovery, and 12.5% for preparedness.
  • NDRF: A central fund activated for severe disasters, supplementing SDRF with similar categories.
  • Both funds cover notified disasters like landslides, floods, earthquakes, and drought, effective from 2022-23 to 2025-26.

🚨 What Disasters Are Eligible for Relief?

If your losses are due to any of the following notified natural disasters, you are eligible for assistance under the SDRF/NDRF guidelines:

  • Loss due to Rainfall is not covered under rules

  • Anything covered by insurance be it house, crop, etc will not get benefit under the rules
